Currywurst – Curry Up Germany
Currywurst is one of the most recognized and popular fast foods in Germany, made legendary by the unique Currywurst sauce.
Usually presented sliced into pieces on a hand-held tray and accompanied by fries, mayonnaise and a small bread roll (Brotchen), it is not uncommon to see people of all ages and walks of life waiting in line for this typical German street food.
While facing stiff competition from an increasing number of ethnic fast food outlets, the Currywurst still has many devoted fans in Germany and is one food item that most tourists will at least try during a visit to the country.
While the origin of Currywurst is foggy at best, legend has it that in 1949 a Berlin house wife, Herta Heuwer, traded beer with British soldiers in exchange for their curry powder. Not familiar with the spice blend, she added it to her own tomato sauce recipe. This combination of familiar flavors with an exotic twist became an overnight sensation. Nowadays around 800 million Currywursts are eaten every year in Germany, with 70 million in Berlin alone. It has become such a part of the German culture that it is now traditional for Berlin mayoral candidates to take promo pictures in front of their favorite Currywurst stands.
Most countries in the world have an attraction dedicated to their national or most-loved dish and Germany is no different. Located in central Berlin, and close to Checkpoint Charlie, the Deutsches Currywurst Museum Berlin presents the legendary snack creation and its own settings: from the invention of the Currywurst in the late 1940s to its role in film, TV and music and its worldwide distribution.
