Chillin’ in Berlin’s Badeschiff

During those sunny summer days in Berlin you may find yourself longing for a refreshing dip, or just somewhere to soak up the sun’s rays, far from the bustle of the city. Lounging beside the river Spree is the Arena Badeschiff, a floating swimming pool which turns into an outdoor pool in summer. Relax beside the water, in a hammock or a sun lounger and enjoy the warm weather between dips.

Berlin’s parks and local lakes are always a great place to enjoy the warm summer months in the city, but the Badeschiff in Kruezberg offers an instant cool down when the sun comes.

A harbored barge functions as an outside floating swimming pool on the river Spree, right in the tradition of old riverside open air baths, giving visitors a unique panoramic view of the river itself, the Oberbaumbrücke and Berlin’s iconic TV tower.

Besides bathing, the beach area around the Badeschiff  or “bathing ship” has become an urban recreational area and a focal point of urban culture and entertainment for many Berliners at any time of the day.  During summertime it offers yoga and standup paddle boarding courses and massage treatments. On top of that beach parties and music events take place on a regular basis.

When not in the water cooling down, visitors can relax on a large sundeck complete with sun loungers, enjoying a cocktail, a cold beer, glass of wine or soft drink from the bar.

The 2018 bathing season lasts from May 1 to September 9th, with the Badeschiff opening at 8 a.m. and closing according to the weather or amount of visitors.  In winter, the cover goes back on, allowing swimmers to do lengths in the warmth of an indoor complex.

If you are planning to visit the Badeschiff this summer, it may be good to know the following in advance:

  • Admission prices are not high. A typical entry ticket costs € 5.50
  • The Badeschiff is a short walk from the Teptower Park S Bahn, and a somewhat longer walk from the Schlesiches Tor U Bahn
  • The depth of the pool is 2.05 meters
  • Children under 14 years must be accompanied by an adult
  • No food or drinks are allowed in the pool area
  • Dogs and bikes are not allowed
  • Reservations are  not possible
  • It can get busy – so arrive early if you can!
