Most Popular Baby Names in Germany 2016

Marie and Elias have topped the list of last year’s most popular baby names in Germany. A list of the most popular names for boys and girls was recently published by der Gesellschaft für Deutsche Sprache (the Society for German Language).

The name Marie has held the top spot for girls since 1999, excluding the year of 2008, when Sophie took the honour. Meanwhile Elias has replace Maximilian as the most common boys’ name in Germany.

The Society for German Language in Wiesbaden has published the list of Germany’s most popular names since 1977, with the rankings based on a nationwide sample of 650 registry offices.
