Oktoberfest Rugby – A Celebration of Sport & Beer
The Oktoberfest Rugby 7s has been held annually in Munich since 1978 and takes place during the middle weekend of the famous two-week beer festival.
Munich’s Oktoberfest is the world renowned event which started this year on September 19th and will continue for the next three consecutive weekends finishing on October 4th.
For those however that fancy a bit of “light exercise” during the celebrations, maybe a game of seven-a-side rugby could be the answer? Starting on Friday September 26th at Munich Rugby Football Club with a “Golden Oldies” tournament, the competition is open to players 18 years and over with a mix of teams comprising those “on tour” and seeking a bit of fun during the Oktoberfest, to those with a more competitive ambition.
It can be quite difficult to confirm in advance the precise schedule of games, often because participating teams usually only sign up a day or two before the event starts. It has also been known for some teams simply not to appear on the Saturday morning due to unexpected beer consumption on the previous Friday night…the organizers therefore have taken a “flexible” approach to the game schedule over the years.
Rugby sevens, also known as seven-a-side, Sevens or VIIs, is a variant of rugby union in which teams are made up of seven players, instead of the usual 15, with shorter matches. The game originated in Melrose (Scotland) where the Melrose Sevens tournament is still played annually. The game is popular at all levels, with amateur and club tournaments generally held in the summer months. Sevens is one of the most well distributed forms of rugby, and is popular in parts of Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas, and especially in the South Pacific.
While this might not be the official playing ball for the Oktoberfest Rugby tournament in Munich, there is an Oktoberfest-themed Lederhosen & Dirndl rugby ball available from WorldRugbyShop.com. Great idea!
