Dortmund End Sportfreunde Lotte Fairy Tale
Borussia Dortmund ended the fairy tale run of Sportfreunde Lotte on Tuesday, beating the third division club 3-0 in the German Cup quarter-finals to set up a final four date with Bayern Munich.
Sportfreunde Lotte which translates as “sports friends” held tough against the Champions League quarter-finalists for a while until Christian Pulisic finally broke through with Dortmund’s first goal in the 57th minute. Andre Schuerrle added a second goal in the 66th minute and Marcel Schmelzer made it 3-0 in the 83rd minute.
The three-time German Cup champions Dortmund moved to within one victory of their fourth straight cup final. But Thomas Tuchel’s men face a tall task in the semis, playing at reigning champions and record winners Bayern Munich on April 25-26.
“It couldn’t have gone any better – 3-0 and now we can look ahead to Bayern,” Dortmund midfielder Gonzalo Castro said.
“Lotte are a very good team but we were very prepared for them. We said ahead of time that we didn’t want to win a beauty pageant, we just wanted to advance.”
“We are very disappointed,” Lotte forward Kevin Freiberger said after the loss. “Whenever you get this far you want to win the game. We played really tough in the first half but then they had a strong second half. We had a good cup season but now we are out.”
Lotte, who are currently fourth in the table in Germany’s third division, had knocked off Bundesliga sides Werder Bremen and Bayer Leverkusen as well as second flight 1860 Munich en route to the German Cup quarter-finals.
Lotte were not intimidated at all by the Champions League quarter-finalists and had the better start with Dortmund keeper Roman Buerki barely getting a hand on Tim Wendel’s chance in the 11th minute. The favourites eventually gained control of the match with Castro coming close on a long distance attempt in the 22nd minute and Raphael Guerreiro’s shot from long range going just wide right two minutes later.
Lotte keeper Benedikt Fernandez made a superb save on Shinji Kagawa four minutes after the re-start but Dortmund finally found the back of the net in the 57th minute. Ousmane Dembele raced forward and then passed to his left to the 18-year-old American Pulisic, who struck through the legs of Fernandez for a 1-0 lead.
Dortmund doubled the lead on 66 minutes with Kagawa passing to Guerreiro and the Portuguese international headed back to Schuerrle, whose side volley made it 2-0.
Schmelzer ended all doubts in the 83rd minute sending his free kick through the wall and Fernandez could only deflect it off the left post and in.
